Zaragoza airport to add 20 routes by summer 2027

Let us walk you through what the Spanish press is reporting today, because the word "vuelos" is climbing on Google Trends after Zaragoza's announcement. According to the official notice from the Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, published on 18 September 2026, the city's airport will add 20 new destinations starting in the summer of 2027, lifting its total offer to 31 commercial routes serving 15 countries across Europe and North Africa (Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Morocco, Switzerland, France and Germany). The city presents this as the biggest connectivity jump in the airport's recent history, roughly tripling its network from 12 routes to 31.

El Español fills in the map that the municipal note keeps broad, naming the new links: Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Warsaw, Krakow, Sofia, Pisa, Naples, Manchester, Porto and Tangier, plus one Swiss connection whose exact city (Basel, Zurich or Geneva) has not yet been settled. COPE Zaragoza, for its part, adds the operational timeline that neither the city note nor El Español detail: the first flights on the new lines are due to take off on 28 March 2027, with tender documents (pliegos) published in the days after the announcement and the contracts awarded in November 2026. No outlet we consulted names the airlines that will actually fly the routes, since that depends on those November awards.

The two main sources also diverge on money, and we are not going to resolve that for you. The Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza frames the effort as a five-year plan financed by the city for a total investment of 20.5 million euros. COPE Zaragoza reports a different figure, an 8.8 million euro joint envelope split between the Aragon government (5.86 million) and the city (2.93 million) and managed by the public company Promoción de Actividades Aeroportuarias. Neither source clarifies whether these are simply different perimeters (an overall budget versus a public-contract tranche), so we flag the gap rather than pick a number.

On the stakes, COPE Zaragoza and the city converge: the goal is 1.3 million annual passengers, up from the 685,000 commercial travellers recorded in 2025, drawing on a catchment area the Ayuntamiento estimates at 2.8 million people. COPE adds the finer projections, 8,788 flights and around 1.6 million available seats, an estimated 88 million euros in net annual social benefit, and 92,000 Aragonese travellers who might stop driving to Madrid or Barcelona to fly. It is that concrete promise, cheaper trips without the trek to a bigger hub, that explains why the story is trending nationally, alongside two quotes relayed by COPE from the official launch: mayor Natalia Chueca saying "Zaragoza está lista para volar más alto que nunca" (Zaragoza is ready to fly higher than ever), and Aragon president Jorge Azcón noting that "la internacionalización de Aragón no se limita a nuestras exportaciones" (Aragon's internationalisation is not limited to our exports).
