F1 returns to Madrid: why "Madring" is trending

F1 returns to Madrid: why "Madring" is trending

According to Moncloa.com, the Spanish Grand Prix runs from 11 to 13 September 2026 on the new Madring circuit in Madrid, marking Formula 1's return to the capital after a 45-year absence. Diario Río Negro puts a date on that gap: the last F1 race held in Madrid was back in 1981, at the Jarama track. That combination, a new venue and a long-awaited comeback, is a large part of why the keyword "Madring" is climbing on Google Trends in Spain right now.

The Spanish press is also relaying the drivers' and organisers' warnings about the layout. Grandprix.com quotes Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali saying that "if you make a mistake, the bill will be expensive, no doubt about it, if you go off the track", pointing to close walls and tight margins. The same outlet describes a distinctive banked section called "La Monumental", roughly 550 metres long, and reports Domenicali's claim that 90% of spectators can reach the circuit without a car thanks to its closeness to Madrid airport and public transport. A MARCA headline dated 8 September 2026 ("Llevo oyendo en casa 15 años que Madrid debía tener un circuito en F1") confirms the event is dominating national sports coverage, though the detail behind that quote was not directly accessible.

One thread that goes beyond race weekend: the courtroom. The Objective reports a legal battle pitting the Italian firm Dromo, led by Jarno Zaffelli and responsible for the circuit's original design, against the German company Tilke, to whom IFEMA handed the project in 2025. Dromo has taken the case to a court in Cologne, accusing Tilke of reusing work protected by copyright. Motor.es adds a concrete step in that procedure: a German court has issued provisional measures barring Tilke from reproducing certain documents from Dromo's initial design.

On the money side, the picture the outlets paint is deliberately upbeat. Madring.com's official communication presents Banco Santander as a "Founding Partner" of the 2026 Fórmula 1 TAG Heuer Gran Premio de España, in a deal framed as going beyond classic sponsorship (the championship, the teams, Openbank, content, education and fan experiences). El Confidencial Digital quantifies the ambition, citing an expected economic impact of 467 million euros and close to 9,000 jobs, and both it and Madring.com note that the circuit is set to stay on the world championship calendar until at least 2035.
