Today's essentials
Menorca's museum: locals now 32% of visitors, up from 8%. Menorcan residents made up 32% of visitors to the Museu de Menorca in Maó in 2025, up from 8% in 2015, and the museum's total attendance nearly doubled over the same decade, Es Diari reported on Sunday 11 October 2026.
The museum in Maó welcomed 39,434 visitors in 2025. In 2024 it had already passed 37,200, a rise of 9.4% on the year before. Es Diari gives two explanations for the growing share of locals: the island is attracting a different kind of tourist, and July and August are getting hotter and hotter.
There is another side to the story. Visits to the archaeological monuments run by the Consell Insular fell by 30% between 2024 and the first eight months of 2026, the same paper reported on 5 October: 93,781 visitors in 2024, 70,320 in 2025 and 47,814 from January to August 2026. The Naveta des Tudons near Ciutadella, the island's most visited monument, dropped from 31,911 to 15,849 over that period. The Torre d'en Galmés in Alaior held up better, going from 17,817 visitors to 12,737. Begoña Mercadal of the Fundació Foment del Turisme and Rafael Durán, who runs the private site of Torralba d'en Salort, pointed to extreme heat, fewer tour operator contracts, the loss of French tourists and higher entry fees. Keep in mind that the jump from 8% to 32% applies only to the museum, not to the open-air sites.
If you want to explore, here are some real places to start. The Museu de Menorca is in the centre of Maó. The Naveta des Tudons is just outside Ciutadella, while the Torre d'en Galmés and Torralba d'en Salort are both in the municipality of Alaior. The Pedreres de s'Hostal, old stone quarries in Ciutadella, have been run since 1994 by the Fundació Lithica. The Castle of San Felipe is in Es Castell. Menorca has no railway, so a car is generally the easiest way to reach the inland sites. Fort Marlborough in Es Castell is closed in 2026 while plans to reopen it are being reviewed.
More than a hundred people attended the II Fòrum Menorca Mira al Futur, organised by Es Diari and the Fundació Foment del Turisme de Menorca. At the forum, Adolfo Vilafranca, president of the Consell Insular de Menorca, proposed a heritage network that would link the island's sites through a shared story and common management rules, covering prehistory, the British period and the island's military, maritime, industrial and rural heritage. Other sites mentioned included La Mola and the Llatzeret in Maó, the Illa del Rei, a former military hospital in Maó harbour that has been under restoration since 2004, the Palacio de Cas Comte in Ciutadella and the archaeological site of Santa Àgueda.
What it means for you: the trend shows islanders taking back their own heritage outside the summer peak. Autumn is a good time to visit the talayotic sites while they are quieter and the heat has eased. Check opening times before you go, and don't plan a visit to Fort Marlborough this year.
Weather today
Grey but dry Sunday across the islands. Palma has an overcast sky this Sunday, 11 October 2026, with a low of 12 degrees, a high of 25, no chance of rain and wind of up to 14 km/h, according to Open-Meteo.
The rest of Majorca is milder overnight: Calvià ranges from 17 to 24 degrees under cloud, with winds of up to 13 km/h and no rain forecast. Formentera has the narrowest range in the archipelago, from 21 to 25 degrees, also overcast, with wind of up to 14 km/h and a 0% chance of rain. Pack a light layer for the cooler morning in Palma, then T-shirt weather by early afternoon. In Ibiza and Formentera, though, Meteoalarm has a yellow storm warning in force, which goes against this dry forecast: moderate damage to people and property is possible, especially in exposed areas, so check the latest update before heading out.

What's changing for you
- Housing decrees rejected, election set for 29 November. Spain is heading to a general election on 29 November 2026 after the Congress of Deputies voted down two housing decree-laws put forward by the government, and a poll reported by Es Diari suggests the PP and Vox would win an absolute majority. In practice, the housing measures in those two decrees will not go ahead for now, so if you were waiting on them to rent or buy, don't count on them before a new government is formed. If you hold Spanish nationality, check that your address on the electoral roll is correct before polling day. EU citizens living in the Balearic Islands cannot vote in general elections, but they can vote in municipal and European elections, so this is a good moment to check your registration for those.
Local news to know
- 200 voices fill Ibiza Cathedral. Around two hundred singers from as many as 22 parishes in Ibiza and Formentera gathered in Ibiza Cathedral on the evening of Saturday 10 October 2026 to perform together, for the first time, the Hymn of the Blessed Martyrs, written in honour of 20 priests killed during the Spanish Civil War, Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera reports.
- Menorcans are (re)discovering their museum. Island residents accounted for 32% of visitors to the Museu de Menorca in Maó in 2025, up from just 8% in 2015, Es Diari reports. If you live on Menorca and haven't been yet, you're now in good company: almost one visitor in three is a local.
