Today's essentials
Ibiza's MAEF trains tour guides in Dalt Vila on 27 October. If you work as a tour guide on Ibiza, the Museo Arqueológico de Ibiza y Formentera (MAEF) is running a free-standing workshop for you on Tuesday 27 October, from 9am to 2pm at the Museo Monográfico de Puig des Molins. Called 'Embajadores del patrimonio de Ibiza: claves para un turismo respetuoso', it starts with a session led by archaeologist Paula Cardona and finishes with a guided walk through Dalt Vila, Periódico de Ibiza reports. The source has not yet said how many places there are, what it costs or how to sign up.
Weather today
Warm, grey and showery across the islands. Palma can expect a low of 22 and a high of 26 degrees on Wednesday 7 October, with scattered showers, a 35% chance of rain and winds of up to 20 km/h, according to Open-Meteo.
In Manacor and the rest of Mallorca, temperatures range from 21 to 26 degrees under overcast skies, with only an 18% chance of rain and gusts reaching 24 km/h. Formentera hardly cools down at all (24 degrees at night, 25 by day), but at 75% it has the highest chance of rain in the archipelago, with winds of up to 26 km/h.
Light clothes are fine everywhere, but bring a compact umbrella if you're going out in Palma or over to the Pitiusas. If you're heading to the north of Mallorca, check the storm warning further down this brief before setting off on a hike or a boat trip.
Transport & traffic
- Sinkhole closes avenida Gabriel Alomar in Palma. According to Ultima Hora, a sinkhole has opened in avenida Gabriel Alomar in Palma near the military barracks, and all three lanes heading towards the Paseo Marítimo are now closed to traffic. Gabriel Alomar is one of the main routes from the east of the city to the seafront, so drivers and bus users should expect diversions and slower traffic around the closed section. Allow extra time if you're crossing Palma towards the port or the Paseo Marítimo, and check for updates before you leave.
What's changing for you
- Menorca's housing promises still unfulfilled. Menorca (Es Diari) reports that the central government has not managed to start its only public housing development in Maó, the Vassallo flats announced in 2022, and that Menorca has no projects at all with the state housing company Casa47. The bigger issue for renters is that rents on Menorca will not be capped: the Govern has refused to declare the island a stressed housing market ('zona tensionada'), which is the legal step needed for rent limits. If you rent on the island, don't plan around price controls arriving soon, and when your lease comes up for renewal, negotiate using what similar flats nearby actually cost.
Local news to know
- Ultima Hora opinion: society as a stage. In an opinion column for Ultima Hora titled 'Teatro creíble', the writer argues that life in society is a kind of theatre, built on conventions that we treat as sacred and permanent rules.
- CB Es Castell makes a dream start. After the first matchday of the C-B conference, Sa Tintina CB Es Castell sits top of the table under its new coach Marc Díaz, and Menorca (Es Diari) singles out Pau Sarrate as one of the stand-out players of the win.
- Charity rice for Cáritas Ibiza on Sunday 11 October. On Sunday 11 October, the Salt & Pepper restaurant in Platja d'en Bossa will host a fundraising meal of 'arroz de matanzas' (traditional pork-season rice) for Cáritas Ibiza, says Periódico de Ibiza.
- Yellow storm warning for northern Mallorca. Meteoalarm has issued a yellow storm warning for the north and northeast of Mallorca, which means moderate damage is possible, especially for vulnerable people or in exposed areas, so check the latest forecast before you go out.
