Today's essentials (5 key points)

  • A free candlelight concert takes place at Ibiza's Sa Caleta archaeological site on Saturday 29 August 2026, staged by the island's Consell as part of the Eivissa Daurada series.
  • The port of Ciutadella in Menorca registered a 1.44 metre rissaga shortly before 1pm, its largest sea-level surge since 2015, under an orange alert.
  • A Plus Ultra jet landed at Palma airport purely for maintenance, and the government-rescued airline still operates no commercial route from Mallorca.
  • The Rafa Nadal Open by Movistar, held from 31 August to 6 September in Manacor, will serve tapas priced between 3 and 5 euros at its Vinos y Tapas event.
  • A severe hailstorm forced organisers to suspend the third stage of La Vuelta 2026, prompting TVE's La 2 to cut its broadcast to black.

Today's essentials

Free candlelight concert at Sa Caleta on 29 August. Ibiza's Consell Insular is staging a candlelight concert at the Sa Caleta archaeological site on Saturday 29 August 2026, part of the Eivissa Daurada series, and Diario de Ibiza reports it is free to attend.

Weather today

Today's weather across the Balearics. Monday 24 August 2026 brings a warm, showery day with highs of 30 to 32 degrees and only a light rain risk, according to Open-Meteo.

In Palma, expect a low of 25 and a high of 30 degrees with scattered showers, a 23 percent chance of rain and a breeze reaching 19 km/h, per Open-Meteo. The rest of Mallorca looks much the same: around Calvia, 24 to 30 degrees, a slightly lower 18 percent rain risk and wind up to 18 km/h. A light layer for a passing shower is worth having, though the morning is fine for the beach.

Menorca and the other islands run warmer and drier: Ciutadella sits between 23 and 32 degrees under an overcast sky, with just a 5 percent rain chance and gustier wind up to 30 km/h. Keep a hat and water to hand if you head inland, where it feels hottest.

Transport & traffic

  • Rescued airline Plus Ultra lands a jet at Palma for repairs. A Plus Ultra aircraft has touched down at Palma airport for maintenance and repair work, Diario de Mallorca reports, even though the airline, bailed out by the Spanish government with 53 million euros, runs no commercial route from the island. For travellers, this changes nothing about your own plans: it is a technical stopover for servicing, not a new connection or a scheduled flight you can book. The aircraft is on the ground for repairs, so passengers heading to or from Palma will see no added routes and no disruption from its presence.
  • One injured in car and truck crash on the Ibiza to Sant Antoni road. One person was hurt when a car collided with a box truck at around 14:40 on the Ibiza to Sant Antoni road, near the Autonetoil petrol station heading towards Sant Antoni, according to Periodico de Ibiza y Formentera. This is one of the island's busiest arteries, so if you are driving that way expect slower traffic and possible tailbacks around the crash point near the petrol station. Leave extra time and take care on the approach until the scene is fully cleared.

What's changing for you

  • Menorca moves to run its own water policy. The Partido Popular is backing a transfer of water resources management to Menorca's Consell so the island can set its own water policy, Es Diari reports, aligning with the Govern and the Consell. Nothing changes on your water bill or supply today, but it is worth watching: if the competence moves to the island, decisions on drought measures, supply and local water rules would be taken in Menorca rather than centrally. The PP insists the handover would come 'with all guarantees', so keep an eye on how the transfer is formalised before it affects households.

Local news to know

  • Historic storm halts La Vuelta's third stage, TVE cuts to black. A violent hailstorm forced the suspension of the third stage of La Vuelta 2026 on Monday, and TVE's La 2 broadcast briefly went to black, as reported by Diario de Mallorca and Diario de Ibiza.
  • Ciutadella's rissaga hits 1.44 metres, biggest since 2015. An orange alert for 'rissaga', the sudden sea-level oscillation known locally by that name, produced a 1.44 metre swing at Ciutadella port shortly before 1pm, the largest recorded in nearly a decade, according to Es Diari.
  • Dea Tanit brings rock and soul covers to Eddie's Diner. The all-female band Dea Tanit will play covers of rock, blues, soul and funk on 5 September from 8pm at Eddie's Diner, Periodico de Ibiza y Formentera reports.
  • Yellow heat alert for inland Mallorca. Meteoalarm has issued a yellow warning for high maximum temperatures in the interior of Mallorca, advising residents to stay informed and take extra care in exposed areas.

Tonight and tomorrow, the Balearic Islands

  • Spirit Festival returns for a fourth edition. Mallorca's Spirit Festival, now in its fourth edition, gathers people to move, connect and explore wellbeing together, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
  • 1,000 Catalan course places for Balearic public servants. The Balearic regional government has launched a Catalan-language training plan offering more than 1,000 places to public sector staff, according to Breizh-info via Google News.
