Today's essentials (4 key points)

  • Open-Meteo forecasts an overcast Wednesday 30 September across the Balearic Islands, with a high of 29 degrees in Palma and almost no chance of rain.
  • The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands has approved a temporary licence for Palma's Bus Nàutic, which should run from November with resident fares of 50 cents a trip, according to Ultima Hora.
  • Formentera processed 48,038 applications during its 2026 vehicle entry season, and the Consell de Formentera is now proposing changes to the Formentera.eco system.
  • The Ibavi housing agency has presented a project for eight public rental homes on the first and second floors of the building above the Maó bus station, reports Menorca Es Diari.

Today's essentials

Sant Antoni: 41 camping fines, yet a wood fills with rubbish. A wooded area near carrer Tramuntana in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, is covered in rubbish bags, alcohol bottles, nitrous oxide canisters and human excrement, a local resident told the Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera on Wednesday 30 September 2026.

The resident, who is not named in the report, also describes cars on the site (some of them apparently abandoned), caravans, and people sleeping in vehicles or tents. They say that over the years the woodland has gone from a place where families came with children and dogs to a dumping ground. Volunteer clean-ups have not fixed it: within a few days, in the resident's words, everything starts again and the rubbish comes back.

The complaint comes during a year of heavy spending by the council. Sant Antoni de Portmany has set up a 122,000 euro municipal contract in 2026 to collect and manage nitrous oxide canisters that are abandoned or seized in the municipality, La Voz de Ibiza reported. In May 2026, the council also approved extra cleaning for streets, beaches and green spaces: eight more workers and two high-pressure cleaning machines, with a budget of 402,062.86 euros for 2026 and 603,907.93 euros for 2027, according to a Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera report dated 28 May.

Enforcement is also stepping up. Since the start of 2026, Sant Antoni's local police have issued 41 fines for wild camping, campervans and irregular set-ups, the same paper reported on 17 September. As part of its summer security plan, the force also uses a drone to watch wooded and hard-to-reach areas. A municipal bylaw bans camping or spending the night in public spaces in Sant Antoni de Portmany, including inside a vehicle. However, none of these measures targets this particular wood by name, and no official response about the carrer Tramuntana site has been reported so far.

What this means for you: if you live near carrer Tramuntana or walk in Sant Antoni's woods, you can report overnight camping in vehicles or tents to the local police, because a municipal bylaw bans it. Dumped rubbish can be reported to the council's cleaning service, which has more staff this year. If you join a volunteer clean-up, wear sturdy gloves and do not touch canisters or human waste with bare hands.

Weather today

Grey and warm across the islands, up to 29 degrees in Palma. Palma will see overcast skies on Wednesday 30 September 2026, with temperatures between 22 and 29 degrees, a 5% chance of rain and winds of up to 11 km/h, according to Open-Meteo.

Elsewhere on Mallorca, Manacor starts the day in fog, with a low of 22 and a high of 28 degrees, a 3% chance of rain and gusts of up to 16 km/h. On Formentera it stays mild all day under cloud, between 25 and 27 degrees, with a 3% chance of rain and winds of up to 14 km/h. Light clothes are enough everywhere, but if you are driving early in the east of Mallorca, allow extra time while the fog lifts.

Transport & traffic

  • Palma's Bus Nàutic: 50 cents a trip for residents from November. The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has launched Palma's Bus Nàutic under a temporary licence and approved the tender for the permanent project, Ultima Hora reports. The boat service is due to start in November. It is meant to take some pressure off the city's road traffic and give both residents and cruise passengers another way to get around. For people who live on Mallorca, the key detail is the resident pass, which will bring each trip down to 50 cents: for anyone who crosses Palma's bay area regularly, that makes the boat a real alternative to a car or bus stuck in traffic.
  • Formentera.eco: 48,038 applications this season. According to the Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera, Formentera has closed its 2026 season of vehicle entry and traffic controls after processing 48,038 applications, more than 40,000 of which were approved. The Consell de Formentera is now assessing how the Formentera.eco system worked and is proposing changes to improve it. If you bring a car or hire a vehicle on the island in summer, expect the application process to change before the 2027 season. It is worth checking the new conditions before you book your next ferry crossing with a vehicle.

What's changing for you

  • Maó: eight public rental homes above the bus station. As published by Menorca Es Diari, the Balearic housing agency Ibavi presented a project on Wednesday 30 September to build eight public rental homes on the first and second floors of the building above the Maó bus station. If you are looking for affordable rent on Menorca, keep an eye on Ibavi's announcements: these homes will be let, not sold, and they are right in the centre of Maó. No timetable or application process has been reported yet, so the practical step for now is to make sure you meet Ibavi's usual requirements, including registration with the town hall (empadronamiento) and residence on the islands.
