Today's essentials (5 key points)

  • According to Ultima Hora, 'La bola negra' took €4.67 million in its first weekend, the best debut ever for a Spanish-language drama.
  • Open-Meteo forecasts an overcast, dry Monday 28 September across the Balearic Islands, with highs of 28 degrees in Palma, Andratx and Sant Antoni.
  • Mallorca's Sóller train has run since 1912 and still uses wooden carriages built that same year.
  • The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that the Spanish government has announced a housing plan that would ban vulture funds and add protection against evictions.
  • Fifteen Menorcan shops will take part in the Fira Outlet Ciutadella, held from 2 to 4 October at the Sala Multifuncional Canal Salat.

Today's essentials

October brings Ibiza's wettest month, averaging 58 mm. On average, October is Ibiza's wettest month, with 58 mm of rain over 5.6 days, according to AEMET climate averages published by Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera on 28 September 2026, yet it still gets 205 hours of sunshine and an average high of 24.0°C.

The figures are AEMET's long-term climate averages for the weather station at Ibiza Airport, in Sant Josep de sa Talaia. They describe a typical year, not a forecast. Over twelve months, the island averages 18.3°C, with 413 mm of rain over about 45 days and 2,744 hours of sunshine, or roughly 7.5 hours a day. August is the hottest month (average high of 30.3°C), January the coolest (average low of 8.1°C) and July the driest, with just 5 mm. The paper also says Ibiza's average temperature has risen by 1.26°C over the past 70 years, but it does not explain how that figure was calculated.

The sea has not cooled yet. The website seatemperature.info, which aggregates readings and gives a rough guide rather than official data, recorded up to 25.8°C at Cala Llonga (Santa Eulària des Riu) and 25.6°C at Cala Portinatx (Sant Joan de Labritja) in September. That is almost as warm as August, when Es Canar reached 27°C and Cala Bassa, in Sant Josep, 26.9°C. Periódico de Ibiza puts the best beach season at mid-June to late September, with air above 26°C and sea above 22°C, so warm water into October is a bonus, not something to count on.

For walking, the paper recommends March to May and October to November. Autumn suits some of the island's best-known walks: the climb to Sa Talaia, Ibiza's highest point, in Sant Josep; the clifftop paths around Cala d'Hort, facing the islet of Es Vedrà; and the wild northern coast of Es Amunts, between Sant Antoni de Portmany and Sant Joan de Labritja. The easiest way to reach the start of these walks is usually by car.

What it means for you: if you live on Ibiza or are heading there, take your beach days while the sea is still close to its late-summer temperature, and have an indoor plan ready for the 5 or 6 rainy days October usually brings. By November, which averages 157 hours of sunshine and 53 mm of rain, the island is better for walking than swimming.

Weather today

Grey skies, dry, and 28 degrees across the islands. Open-Meteo forecasts an overcast but dry Monday 28 September 2026 in the Balearic Islands, with highs of 28 degrees in Palma, Andratx and Sant Antoni.

Palma drops to 22 degrees at its coolest, under a covered sky, with no chance of rain (0%) and wind up to 16 km/h. Further west in Mallorca, Andratx stays slightly warmer overnight at 23 degrees and is dry too, with the breeze reaching 19 km/h. On Ibiza, Sant Antoni has the same 23 to 28 degree range, a 3% chance of rain and wind up to 16 km/h.

Light clothes are enough and you can leave the umbrella at home. The cloud cover should make a midday walk more comfortable than on a clear late-summer day.

Transport & traffic

  • Nus de sa Corbata: the road that loops over itself. A post on Reddit's r/mallorca community highlights the Nus de sa Corbata, the 'tie knot' where a Mallorcan mountain road crosses over itself. The knot is on the winding road down to Sa Calobra in the Serra de Tramuntana, one of Mallorca's best-known drives, where the road curls round and passes under its own lanes. If you are driving there, expect a narrow, twisting road shared with cyclists and coaches, and go early in the morning if you want a calmer trip.
  • Sóller train still uses its 1912 wooden carriages. Mallorca's Sóller train has been running since 1912 with wooden carriages from that same year, as a post on r/mallorca points out. The line runs between Palma and Sóller through the Serra de Tramuntana, and the vintage carriages are its main attraction. For residents, it is more of a scenic day out than a way to commute, and a relaxed way to reach Sóller without driving the mountain roads.

What's changing for you

  • Assault in a sublet room in Santa Eulària. Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera reports that a family living in Santa Eulària des Riu, including a mother who is seven months pregnant, was caught up in an assault at the flat where they sublet a room. The paper links the case to Ibiza's shortage of affordable housing. If you rent a room from a tenant rather than from the owner, ask for a written agreement and check that the main lease allows subletting, because an informal arrangement gives you very little protection. In an emergency, call 112.
